Today is the 3rd anniversary since we said goodbye to our sweet baby boy. Luke Henry Feenstra was born into the arms of Jesus at 8:52 pm on August 10th, 2007. He was just over 5 1/2 inches long, small enough to hold in the palm of our hand. He was beautiful, 10 fingers, 10 toes, perfect little lips and eyes closed.
I have spent more time reflecting and remembering Luke's short time with us this year, I am sure it is because I am pregnant again, and that in itself draws a myriad of emotions out of me. I went to our caring page to re-read the journey as well as pullled out my personal journal from my pregnancy with him. It feels like a lifetime ago and like yesterday all in the same. Losing a child (wether pregnant 10 days or having a child here on earth for years) is something you never get over. I don't think God intends for us to ever "get over it". It's a scar Matt and I carry that no one else can see or feel.
"This has been the most difficult week thus far for me, as I watch my precious belly grow, I fall more and more in love with this child, and there are moments where it is so hard to keep a brave face on. I have to remind myself that I am not strong enough to pull through this on my own, and wasn't created to do so, God just waits for me to cry out to Him, and I always do, it doesn't mean it's any less difficult." I wrote this on 8.6.10 (right around the time he passed)
It is amazing to look at Brooklyn and know that He knew her name even during that season of our lives, he knew she would be the first child we would raise here on earth. It truly blows my mind, because in the end I wouldn't change a thing, but even that is hard to say out loud, as the longing for my son will never disappear.
Matt's post on Aug 10, 2007 3:20pm
"To our beloved family and friends,I know you all have been waiting to hear news about our ultrasound appointment this morning. Lauren and I found out the news this morning that the Lord had called Luke Henry Feenstra home sometime this past week. As I write this post, Lauren is laying in a hospital bed in the OHSU labor and delivery wing, preparing to have labor induced. I am home for a few moments to collect some things we need, and then running back to the hospital to be with my beautiful, courageous wife. This has already been one of if not the single hardest days of my life, so amplify that by about 10x and that's probably how Lauren is feeling at this moment. We need your prayers now more than ever, as we are in for 24-36 hours at the hospital and must go through the angony of a still birth. We know that the Lord has shown his incredible mercy to Luke and to our family. We believe that the Lord knew that his path would have been one filled with pain and decided to instead take him up in his arms and give him a life of joy. For that we are grateful. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers this weekend.
Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking in anything...Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.
James 1:2-4,12
Amen. "I am so thankful to have all these memories, posts, journal entries and pictures to help me remember him. What a treasure. I have spoken to women who lost children during a time where it was not appropriate to grieve a miscarriage or still birth, they were supposed to suffer silently, move on and not speak of it again. That breaks my heart, as we remember by speaking the name of those we lost. I praise my Lord and Savior that Luke never had to know pain here, he was fortunate enough to go straight to Jesus, and live a perfect life from the start. Thank you Lord, for knowing more than simple me.
WHAT MAKES A MOHTER
I thought of you and closed my eyes
And prayed to God today.
I asked what makes a Mother
And I know I heard him say.
A Mother has a baby
This we know is true.
But God can you be a Mother
When your baby's not with you?
Yes, you can He replied
With confidence in His voice
I give many women babies
When they leave is not their choice.
Some I send for a lifetime
And others for a day.
And some I send to feel your womb
But there's no need to stay
I just don't understand this, God
I want my baby here
He took a breath and cleared His throat
And then I saw a tear.
I wish I could show you
What your child is doing today.
If you could see your child smile
With other children and say
"We go to earth to learn our lessons
Of love and life and fear.
My Mommy loved me oh so much
I got to come straight here.
I feel so lucky to have a Mom
Who had so much love for me
I learned my lesson very quickly
My mommy set me free.
I miss my Mommy oh so much
But I visit her each day.
When she goes to sleep
On her pillow's where I lay.
I stroke her hair and kiss her cheek
And whisper in her ear.
Mommy don't be sad today
I'm your baby and I'm here."
So you see my dear sweet one
Your children are ok
Your babies are here in My home
And this is where they'll stay.
They'll wait for you with Me
Until your lesson is through.
And on the day that you come home
They'll be at the gates for you.
So now you see what makes a Mother
It's the feeling in your heart.
It's the love you had so much of
Right from the very start.
Though some on earth may not realize you are a Mother,
Until their time is done.
They'll be up here with Me one day
And you know you're the best one!
